Research topics are often given to postgraduate students as thesis subjects with the
notion 'you ought to know it'. Most of them are however, unaware of what their thesis work
is all about. This book should be a great relief to all those who are yet to write their
thesis and authors deserve to be complimented for bringing out this book.
Importance of thesis writing as an integral part of medical training has been highlighted
in the book by emphasizing the point that intention of this exercise is not always to
bring out something new but to get trained in systematic problem solving. This is
essential to train our postgraduate students in adopting a scientific approach to problems
faced in professional life.
The book outlines the approach to formulate research problems and describes various
experimental designs in a lucid manner, which is easy to understand for a beginner. The
book has also strongly stressed the importance of sampling techniques particularly with
reference to study design. Sections on data analysis and presentation nicely bring out the
rational interpretation and understanding of results, tabulation of data and presentation
of data, which is supported by simple and useful diagrams.
Better thesis writing will certainly benefit the post graduate students if they read it
before conceptualizing a research topic.
